Earlier this year, Oscar Farinetti, founder of the successful Eataly chain of food emporiums, announced a new plan to help rescue Italy’s ailing economy. It is going to be called “Fico Eataly World”. It will be a theme park dedicated entirely to food and wine which will not only create jobs but also boost economic activity. The project is a joint venture between Eataly and the municipality of Bologna, who has set aside 80,000 square meters of land which will be transformed into food labs, grocery stores and dozens of restaurants. It will even have a giant aquarium. The price tag for the park is estimated at R550 million and it is set to open on 1 November, 2015.
Eataly is a high-end Italian food market chain comprising a variety of restaurants, food and beverage stations, bakery and retail items. Eataly has over two dozen branches around the world in major international cities like Chicago, New York, Dubai, Istanbul, Milan and Florence and Tokyo. Eataly’s manifesto states ‘Good food brings all of us together and helps us find a common point of view’.
Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in the north of Italy and is situated in the province Bologna.
