In Season: Gooseberries

The Cape gooseberry, whose name is inspired by the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, is a small, tart orange fruit similar in size, shape and texture to a small tomato and from the same family.  It is commonly used in fruit desserts like Gooseberry Fool or served in cooked sauces for rich meat like roast duck.  It is a rich source of antioxidants, iron, vitamin A, C, fiber, potassium, magnesium, calcium and dietary fiber.  Once removed from its papery husk, it can be eaten raw and used in salads. It can also be made into fruit preserves or dried and used like raisins.  It is also closely related to currants.  Also see my recipe for Gluten-free Baked Cheesecake served with gooseberries and cream.
