July 2013 Newsletter

With the first half of the 2013 Calendar’s pages in the bin and the July School Holiday’s in full swing, it should be downhill until the end of the year!

The theme for this month’s recipes is American Cuisine.  I included a few of my favourite American recipes – most of them seems to be from the South!  As per usual, I included a few recipes from Carolié’s popular Art Of Cooking Recipe Book.  They are:  Pink Lemonade, Cajun-style Blackened Fish, American Corn Bread, Southern Fried Green Tomatoes, Pink Remoulade, Mississippi Mud Pie and Boston Cream Pie.  Carolié de Koster contributed the recipes for the Gluten-free Mock Bread and the Cereal Bake. Be sure to have a look at the recipe for corn chowder, from last month’s newsletter.  Read more further down.

An American-themed newsletter would not be complete without mentioning something about America’s favorite chef and one of the world’s best-known cooks, Julia Child (1912-2004), who introduced French cuisine and cooking techniques to Americans in the 1960’s.  Julia’s influence as an author of more than a dozen cookbooks and host of a number of television shows turned her into the first ever celebrity chef.   Read more further down.

The first of a series of six French Cooking Classes which I developed for Parkhurst Kitchen, took place last week Tuesday.  It is not too late to join this French Cooking Course.   If you book for all 6 the classes of the course, the 6th class will be on the house!  If you missed the first class, you will be able to catch up a the next few months.  Read more further down.

If you would like to book an “Ek het dit self gemaak/I made it myself!” cooking party for your child’s next birthday, I recommend you secure the date with me as soon as possible.  Especially if you want it to take place on a Saturday.  Read more further down.

The Divine Delights Cake Boutique Cake Tasting & Cake Feast will be taking place on Sunday 21 July.  Two lucky readers have the opportunity to win a ticket to this event.  The first two readers to reply to this newsletter with the word “cake” in the subject line, will win the tickets.  Read more further down.

Reminder of other upcoming foodie events this month – see you there!

I specialize in tailor-made cooking lessons – whether for yourself or your domestic worker, housekeeper or nanny.  This is what one of my clients had to say after I trained her domestic worker:  “Jeanri is extremely professional, comes fully prepared for every lesson and puts every effort into making sure that your domestic worker learns to cook. She even spent time with mine, teaching her maths so that she could halve recipes, double up on portions etc. Jeanri goes shopping on your behalf and makes sure that you have everything you need for a lesson, even down to the equipment needed in the kitchen so that there is no delay in lesson time. Everything she taught Fredah to cook has been delicious and we have used her recipes over and over. My domestic worker has gained a lot of confidence in the kitchen. Jeanri ensures that your domestic is able to write up a shopping list, keep to excellent hygiene standards in the kitchen, cook, bake, and tidy up properly afterwards. Definitely money well spent, I can only highly recommend her.” Kelly, Parkview. Read more further down.

With US President Barack O’Bama’s visit to South-Africa this past week and the preparations for the 4th of July celebrations in the United States in the first week of July, I thought it fitting to include a few American recipes in this month’s newsletter.   They are:  Pink Lemonade, Cajun-style Blackened Fish, American Corn Bread Southern Fried Green Tomatoes, etc.

Julia-Child

American Food Icon: Julia Child

Legendary cook and teacher Julia Child (1912–2004) had a tremendous impact on food and culinary history in America. Through her books and television series, which spanned forty years, she encouraged people to care about food and cooking. She inspired many Americans to conquer their fears of the unfamiliar and to expand their ideas about ingredients and flavors, etc.

Cooking Parties For Kids

When booking a cooking party for your child, you have the option to choose the language in which the party will be conducted, i.e. ”Ek het dit self gemaak!” or ”I made it myself!“. The parties can take place on-site, i.e. at your house or venue (like a club house or lapa) or at one of my venues. Seeing that most birthday parties usually take place on or close to the actual birth date, please book in advance if you want to secure a specific date.
