XO Patisserie in Melville, Johannesburg, is one of the few bakeries in South Africa where you can find a local version of the cronut, the popular croissant/doughnut hybrid. When you eat a cronut you get the best of both – croissant-type pastry fried in oil, rolled in sugar, filled with cream and topped with glaze. It is downright decadent!
This croissant/doughnut hybrid was invented in New York by chef Dominique Ansel in May 2013, and since then the popularity of the Cronut™ has made it the most talked about pastry in history. See the post Crazy For Cronuts for more info.
Not only can you stock up on cronuts at XO Patisserie, you can also get XOnuts, which is a baked version of this popular pastry. You can also pair your pastry with artisan-roasted coffee or home-made teas.
According to owners Mitesh Dayal and Yaseen Essa, they are planning on constantly evolving their menu with new flavours. Some new options to look forward to include the Croconut (a coconut cronut) and their savoury XOnut (feta, pesto, fresh basil and tomato). – Cinnamon Butter – a harmonious mix of cinnamon and sweet buttercream icing
– Salted Caramel and Passionfruit – a trending and popular flavour combination
– Sweet Lemon Mint – a refreshing mix of sweetened lemon and subtle mint, for refined palettes
– Chocolate Hazelnut – their most popular flavour. Topped with nuts.
